On the Road to Business-driven IT, AIOps Empowers IT-driven Business



AIOps! I’ve ranted about industry acronyms before and it’s often hard to keep up.


But, sometimes, acronyms are born of necessity. Terms are coined by people and companies to help us all – IT managers, operations, data, business and developers alike – to make sense of this fast-paced industry. They enable us all to move forward in a structured manner with a clear (albeit evolving) definition of each and everyone’s role. Kind of like a ‘living’ org chart we can map our way around the industry with. 


Now, it's AIOps the up-and-coming acronym. The term AIOps really struck a chord with me because it refers to the “bigger picture” approach to IT that I firmly subscribe to. But a closer look at the term as coined by Gartner left me wanting.


AIOps as defined by Gartner:

Algorithmic IT Operations.


That’s right, not Artificial Intelligence but Algorithmic IT. I’m not really sure why, perhaps to err of the side of caution because artificial intelligence it is still a relatively visionary term for business operations at this point in its evolution. Perhaps it’s because AIOps platforms are still in the early stages of adoption. But the concept is clear – business is reshaping IT, the next step will be for IT to provide business with the tools to achieve a data-centric approach to leverage customer experience.


State of the nation in ITOM or ITOA is that most of us have successfully made it to that point at which where algorithms and machine learning are automating conventionally manual tasks and processes in IT Operations.


The more advanced and perhaps forward-thinking enterprises are already adopting a more evolved form of this by implementing platforms that are founded on real Artificial Intelligence capabilities that provide real-time analysis and insights to enable automated prediction &  resolutions that go beyond detection. Once this becomes more commonly utilized, the next step will be to introduce AIOps using the more intelligent platform that actually provides these capabilities – and then maybe the Acronym will be updated as well?


Gartner estimates that by 2019, 25% of global enterprises will have strategically implemented an AIOps platform that supports two or more major IT operations functions, up from fewer than 5% today.


As a ‘bigger picture’ kind of guy with a close eye on IT evolution, I don’t see how this will be in any way possible without updating this acronym to reflect what it really requires. If it were up to me to coin this term, I’d call a spade a spade: Artificial Intelligence today provides capabilities that lie far beyond the power of any algorithm, Artificial Intelligence Operations is here and it’s the true key unlocking the future of DPM.


Regardless of how advanced your operations management is, I am sure you will agree – there is always room for evolution.
